Many
times we make plans, and circumstances don’t enable those plans to
come to fruition. This is
what has happened to me during the last three months.
I asked for time off so I could dive into learning to give the
tests that determine that a California community college student has a
learning disability. A
person must have special training and certification to give these
psychoeducational tests. I had asked a coworker, our learning disabilities specialist
where I work, to teach me the tests.
She said she would, but circumstances that neither one of us had
any control over prevented her from teaching them to me.
However, I didn’t waste time. I have done a lot of studying and reading and have decided to take classes that will help me become a learning disabilities specialist. My coworker has been my teacher and mentor, but she has become much more. So no, I didn’t get to learn the tests, but God has given me a wonderful friend. I have been able to turn to her for advice in many areas of my life, and I treasure the time we get to spend together. My greatest desire is that somehow I can lead her to Christ. seems that whenever immoral practices have been outlawed, those who
practice or support
those who practice these immoral activities will inevitably say,
"Our government shouldn't legislate morality." Of
late, these words have been spoken with regard to the Texas sodomy laws
that the Supreme Court recently declared were unconstitutional. Now,
we're hearing the same cry with regard to homosexual marriages.
Homosexuals, we're told, should have the same right to marry as
heterosexuals. "Our government shouldn't legislate morality!" Oh
really? I don't think people really mean what they say. In fact, I'm
sure they don't. I dare say the one who is overheard saying, "Our
government shouldn't legislate morality," is glad to know that our
government has established laws against cheating, stealing, robbery,
rape, battery, and murder, all of which are "moral" issues. You
see, people really don't have a problem with government legislating
morality. The fact of the matter is, they are glad it does. The problem
comes when the government legislates against an immorality that one
particularly enjoys to practice. Give

you ever suffer from “the-world-centers-around-me” syndrome?
We all do at some time or another.
Next time you do, pick up your Bible and read the psalms.
Here’s the kind of thing you will find: 21:1
“the king rejoices in YOUR strength…” 22:9,
10 “Yet YOU brought me out of the womb; YOU made me trust in you even
at my mother’s breast…From birth I was cast upon YOU; from my
mother’s womb YOU have been my god.” 23:2
“HE makes me lie down…”
“HE leads me.” 23:4
“I will fear no evil for YOU are with me…” 23:5
“YOU prepare a table…” 24:1
“The earth is the Lord’s and everything in it… for HE founded it
upon the seas…” Realize
that the center of the universe does not revolve around you.
It’s all about God. That’s
why David would pen these words in the very next psalm (25:4)
“Show me YOUR ways, O Lord, Teach me YOUR paths.”
Why? “For YOU are God, my Savior, and my hope in is YOU all day
long.” You
can spend time thinking about your accomplishments, or you can think
about what God has done in your life to this point.
The first exercise might be kind of fun.

story is told of the mother of Marshall Field, who gave the University
of Chicago a sum of one million dollars.
When the board of directors at Northwestern University (also
located in Chicago) heard of the gift, they inquired why a similar gift
had not been given to their school.
The important reply came: “Because Northwestern didn’t
ask.” In
one of the parables of Jesus, certain ones are asked why they stand idle
all the time. The reply is:
“Because no one has hired us” (Matthew 20:7).
Could your neighbor say that he is not a Christian because no one
has ever asked him? Are
there those within your circle of influence who do not attend worship or
Bible classes because you have never invited them?
Are there children in your block who do not come to Sunday school
because they have never been encouraged to do so?
Is there, perhaps, even another member of your own family who
needs an invitation from you? There
has been a tendency in the past to think that since we have a church
building, have announced our schedule of services, have told people they
are welcome and preach the gospel from our pulpit, we have fulfilled our
responsibility to our neighbors. We
think, “If they really want to be saved, they’ll come.”
But that often is not true.
They are waiting to be asked and wondering why you have not asked
them if you really care about their soul.
There are times when a word fitly spoken is “like an apple of
gold in a picture of silver” (Proverbs 25:11). Think
back briefly to your own conversion.
Did it not help you to know that someone actually cared whether
you were or were not converted? I
am sure there must be many who hesitate simply because we do not show an
interest in them. There are
some things we say to people that hurt and are harmful, but it never
